About Lucky Dog Boarding and Training

Lucky Dog Boarding & Training Center, LLC was started in the fall of 2005 to help meet the needs of the canine and feline populations in the Detroit Lakes area. There was demand for dog training classes, but no facility with space dedicated to regular training sessions was available. Doggie day care was a growing trend in the industry. The Detroit Lakes Animal Hospital had offered boarding services and had held the city pound contract for years but was in transition to a new expanded medical facility. Zoning ordinances would not allow DLAH to board animals beyond acute medical care. The time for a pet center offering multiple services was right.

A rented building on 8 th Street served as a start up location from 2005 until October of 2007. Services offered included dog and cat boarding, city impound, training classes, daycare, grooming and limited retail. Business grew rapidly and the need for a larger facility was apparent. A lot in the north industrial park was the perfect place to build a facility specifically designed for our programs.

Today Lucky Dog Boarding & Training Center, LLC has grown into a complex, housing the boarding and training operation as well as three other entities. The Lucky Dog complex is home to The Marshmallow Foundation, a 501(c)3 entity that currently holds city pound contracts with the cities of Audubon, Callaway, Detroit Lakes, Frazee, Lake Park, Mahnomen and Waubun. Marshmallow operates a large scale rescue, taking in 450-600 dogs and cats each year. A Bit of Elegance Grooming Salon is owned by Sue Fiste, a master groomer. Sue provides both dog and cat grooming services from the groom room at Lucky Dog. Patriot AssistanceDogs, a 501(c)3 program rents limited kennel space and runs their training programs from the complex as well. Training services as well as office and training space are currently donated to Patriot Assistance Dogs as the organization grows to meet the needs of the military Veterans who receive these dogs.

Lucky Dog Boarding & Training Center, LLC is owned and operated by Linda Livingston Wiedewitsch (with a good measure of support from husband Archie!) The center offers a variety of services. As our name implies, boarding and training services are our mainstay. Boarding kennels are spacious and offer raised beds for your dog’s comfort. Boarding cats are housed in cat condos.

Training options are many including group classes held year round; one on one training sessions with our trainers to work on specific training issues with you and your dog; as well as a variety of board and train, or daycare and train packages both short and long term. If we don’t offer a training package that meets your needs, please design one that does and make us an offer!

Our complex is set on 14 acres of completely fenced (six foot chain link) land located in the city limits of Detroit Lakes. We have a large training yard for outdoor training and classes. We offer two dog parks for use by the public as well as our day care and boarding dogs. We also have seven acres of mowed and fenced in walking trails, offering unlimited romping for our canine friends.

Daycare is operated seven days a week and available to both boarding dogs and the public. The daycare dogs spend supervised time in the dog parks every day that weather permits. On inclement weather days, the dogs romp in pens on the training floor.

Lucky Dog offers a limited selection of retail products. We stock the items we feed, train with and provide to our own dogs. The most honest recommendation we can give a product is to use it on our personal dogs, hence our motto; "At Lucky Dog we treat your dog as if it were our own!"
