Lucky Dog Boarding & Training Center , LLC. was opened December 1, 2005 by co-owners Linda Livingston Wiedewitsch and Mary R. Holsen. The business was housed in a rented building on 8 th Street, in Detroit Lakes, MN.

Services offered included boarding, training, pet daycare, limited retail and grooming as well as housing city pound animals. The owners were the original two employees.

As the business grew, additional volunteers and part time employees were added, including professional groomers, specialty trainers, and full time pet daycare. Demand for a variety of training classes increased as did the need for more retail space. Boarding numbers grew rapidly. A lot in the North Industrial Park on Mallard Street was purchased and building plans finalized. Construction began in April 2007.

Bob Bristlin & Son was the general contractor on the project. Sub contractors included Modern Plumbing & Heating, Marks Electric, Hough Inc., Eastman Fence Co., Concrete and Olson Pool & Spa.

Lucky Dog opened for business at 1478 Mallard Street, Detroit Lakes, MN on October 1, 2007 . The building houses Lucky Dog operations as well as Club Canine Daycare operated by Deb Atchia and Mottley’s All Breed Grooming operated by Erin Foley. Lucky Dog employs four full time and eleven part time workers. These employees’ backgrounds range from vet tech to kennel manager, LPN to retired canine handler, CPA to dog and cat breeders, all are animal owners.

Lucky Dog supports the 4-H dog project, teaching the 4-H classes and staging the annual 4-H dog show. Three employees are raising puppies for service organizations including Leader Dogs for the Blind and Hearing and Service Dogs of Minnesota. Lucky Dog also supplies Dog Handler teams for the R.E.A.D program at the Detroit Lakes Library.

Services currently offered at the Mallard Street Location include boarding, daycare, grooming, retail, self-serve dog wash, city pound services, adopt-a-pet, seminars, microchip clinic, hydro therapy pool, public dog park, gundog training area, and training packages designed to meet most anyone’s needs. Group training classes, one on one training, daycare and training combos, board, and train packages as well as hands on clinics are available.
