Lucky Dog Animal Impound

Click here to view pets for Adoption or Recently found

Lucky Dog will post on this website animals that have been found, the date they were found, and the location. By state law, an impound facility must hold animals for 5 days, and then they may be adopted, sold, or euthanized. Animals are advertised by radio, newspaper, and internet.

Dogs and cats are only impounded from within the city limits of Detroit Lakes, not out in Becker County (those animals would be sent through the Humane Society of the Lakes (218-847-0511). They may only be turned in by a city official or police officer.

Do you have a cat or dog that needs to be claimed?

Claiming your Pet

If you need to claim an animal, be prepared to answer these questions and provide written proof.

  • Is your pet current on its Rabies vaccination? In Minnesota, that means a Rabies vaccination has been given in the last 2 years. We need to see a rabies certificate with the correct information, speak with or receive a fax from your vet, or see the tag with your vet’s information. Your statement that it is current is unfortunately not enough.
  • What if my pet is not current on its rabies vaccination? Your pet will need to have that vaccination updated before being allowed to leave Lucky Dog. Dr. Lange of Audubon or the Detroit Lakes Animal Hospital provide veterinary service for us, and we will arrange to have the vaccination updated at our earliest convenience. Many times your pet will need to stay overnight until this can be done; you will still incur and be responsible for these boarding charges.
  • Do you have a city license? If you live in the Detroit Lakes city limits, your dog/cat is required by law to have a city license. To get a city license, your dog/cat needs a current rabies vaccination. A city license must be purchased at the time your dog/cat is released from the pound if you live in city limits.
Charges for claiming an animal are at the following rates:
    • $19 per day for boarding, extra half day charged after noon
    • $10 city fine
    • $12 city license for unaltered males and females, $7 for spayed or neutered animals
    • $20 for Rabies vaccination
    • All bills must be paid in full before the animal may leave; we do not hold checks. (We do accept credit cards.)

  • I don’t feel that I should have to pay the city fine or boarding for my animal since it wasn’t my fault it got loose.
    • Lucky Dog is just the agency housing the animals. If your animal was picked up and running at large, it is in violation of city code 502.04. Please take up any disagreements with the Detroit Lakes Police Department at (218)847-4222 or Animal Control at (218)847-4637.
